What is individual health insurance

Health insurance is a way to pay for your private healthcare. With individual private health insurance you are protected against high medical costs because the health insurance company will pick up the bills, partially or fully, when you make a valid claim.

When buying health insurance, you choose a plan that fits your needs and you agree to pay a certain rate each month or each year. In return, you can access private healthcare when you need medical care.

What does health insurance cover?

Health insurance is designed to cover the cost of private medical care for unexpected, acute, short-term conditions (that are curable), and won’t usually cover pre-existing conditions, and the routine maintenance and monitoring of chronic conditions.

Private health insurance can include cover for inpatient, outpatient or day-patient treatment and,  with most insurers, you can adjust the level of cover according to your preference. You can usually also add extra benefits such as dental and optical cover, physiotherapy, mental health and alternative therapies.

More frequently asked questions & answers

Can I get health insurance cover for my family?

Yes, it’s very common for families to get health insurance cover that protects all members of the family. A family health insurance plan can help you look after your loved ones and after your finances. Find out more about family health insurance.

Can I get health insurance if I’m over 50 years old?

Yes, Although it’s always best to get health insurance sooner rather than later in life. The earlier you get health insurance (even if you are over 50) the more likely you are to be covered for any conditions that appear after the start of your policy (unless they are part of any pre-existing medical conditions).

Can I change my health insurance plan or provider?

You are entitled to switch your health insurance policy or provider and the process is often very smooth and simple. There are various reasons why someone would want to change their health insurance, including increased premiums, dissatisfied service or unsuitable cover.

Even if you are happy with your current health insurance, it’s always a good idea to regularly review your policy because there might be better plans on the market that could also save you money. UK Health Insurance can review your health insurance policy for free and advise you whether you should consider switching. Find out more about switching health insurance or request a quote today.

Do I need health insurance?

Private health insurance is optional and works alongside NHS medical services which are free. This means that even if you have health insurance, you can still choose to use the NHS or may have to do so in some cases (e.g. accidents and emergencies).

Here are some statements to help you decide if you need health insurance:

  • When I need medical care, I want to be diagnosed and treated quicky without having to wait.
  • If I have a planned admission to hospital, I want to stay in a private and comfortable room.
  • I want access to treatment and drugs not available on the NHS.
  • I can’t afford to pay for private treatment myself but I can easily afford to pay a set amount of money each month to cover the costs of private healthcare when I need it.

Does health insurance cover cancer?

Even though health insurance does not usually cover chronic diseases, cancer tends to be viewed differently by health insurance companies who will typically offer cancer cover as part of their core cover, or as an optional benefit. Cancer cover can differ from company to company and it can include anything from diagnostic tests to surgery and aftercare. If cancer cover is important to you, we will make sure your policy will provide the cover you need.
